WEEK 44 FOUNDATION MINUTE
ROTARIAN MOTHERS
Sunday, May 9th was Mother’s Day – when we stopped to honor the Mothers in our own lives and all Mothers. Many of us paused to remember how our own mothers instilled in us the values of giving to others, serving those less fortunate, and approaching life with love. Mothers (and Dads) are the first teachers of our children. We are the ones who set the example of how to live in a civilized, respectful society, and who model the behavior we hope will be followed as our children grow as citizens of a global world. We teach empathy, fairness, respect and generosity and share our Rotarian values with the next generation.
It is up to us to ensure that our children participate in service to others while young – to get into the habit of helping others. Our District has supported Interact Clubs which offer the youth in our communities an opportunity to be of service together through local hands-on service projects. When it is again possible, encourage your children to join with you in the projects of your Rotary club – or a nearby club – a great way to become a Rotary family.
Rotary service also inspires us to respond when we see needs in our communities and around the world. Talk with your children and grandchildren about the grants and initiatives your club and others are working on and why you spend time trying to help people you will never meet. Leave your Rotarian Magazine out when children visit – it’s a terrific conversation piece – and opens young eyes to a world beyond their community. It’s never too early to plant the seeds of Rotary service in the next generation.
